Environmental Toxins are one of the attributing factors to Learning Disabilities. The state of WV services 15% of its students, under IDEA law. A percentage that does not include the grossly larger population of students, NOT served by the state, due to negligence in identifying and servicing these students, on the part of the public school system. With already a lack of services and funding, how will the county account for additional funding to service a greater population of students in the future, who will be impacted by these toxic environmental factors? Has Jefferson County accounted for the increase in special needs students entering the system, after being exposed to these pollutants from Rockwool, while in utero, and after birth... in early childhood? A time in the development of life, when the architecture of the brain is still being formed! Students who will later become students of Jefferson County Public Schools, and eventually, the future generation of our state. As the State Leader for Decoding Dyslexia-WV, an advocate for the underserved students in the learning disability community, it is disturbing that the county would not have thought out this plan of adding this kind of toxic industry, to this thriving historical, agricultural, artistic and tourism community! In the best interest of growing minds, as my role as advocate; and my role as a mother of five children...two of which have Autism and two with dyslexia, I know more than ever, the importance to limit the environmental impact contributing to the impact and quality of life that environmental toxins are proven to have on developing brains. The Jefferson County Commission & especially the Board of Education needs to reevaluate the consequences approving this action will have on our most precious state resource... our children!
